“When Ostapenko changes step” was an expression occasionally (and surreptitiously) heard in Communist-era Hungary. It referred to a giant statue of Captain Ilija Ostapenko, a soldier in the Red Army, domineeringly situated for four decades at a prominent junction in Budapest. Ostapenko is seen carrying a flag and marching triumphantly in the statue. The expression’s sentiment, though, is one of dreary hopelessness: the Soviet soldier would never change step, and Communism would last for lifetimes to come.
