Open-Source Transportation

That’s right, there are those who believe that open source can extend beyond the production of software and into hardware as well: namely, the production of automobiles.

There are a few open-source car projects out there, such as OScar, c,mm,n and the 40 Fires Foundation set up by UK-based transport firm Riversimple.

OScar appears to have led the way back in 2000 with this opening mission statement on its website

A community of people plans and develops a new car in the web. The idea is about the goal to develop a simple and innovative car, but also about the way how this goal is achieved. We would like to convey the idea of Open Source to “hardware”…

One thing we can probably count on: open-source cars won’t run as slowly as Firefox.
