Cartoonist Gets Back at Slovak PM Through Giant Billboards

Last September, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico sued one of his country’s largest newspapers, SME, for $43,000 and an apology over a cartoon by Martin “Shooty” Sutovec. Sutovec had portrayed Ficoas a man without a backbone.

Now, with less than two weeks to go before Slovaks head to the polls in nation-wide parliamentary elections on June 12, Sutovec is getting even. According to reports in the Slovak press, Sutovec has raised close to $85,000 from 2,000 to buy up 200 giant billboards throughout the country.

The billboards feature caricatures that parody Fico and other top Slovak politicians. Sutovec is also planning to print up 200,000 stickers and 100,000 postcards poking fun at the country’s leaders.

“The people’s reaction surprised me,” Sutovec, who had originally planned to raise $6,500, was quoted as saying in SME.
