MEMOIRS Excerpts From Anderson Cooper's Little Black Hurricane Book
Hurricane Agnes
I was 15 when I met
Agnes. Our family had gone to Florida on vacation.
She was my first hurricane. Being with her was
fast and furious. My knees shook and my teeth chattered.
And before I knew it I was all wet and it was over.
Hurricane Fran
Some buddies and I went down to
Florida during a break from college. There I was
dancing and drinking a few beers when along came
Fran with her huge torrential rains and 120 mph winds.
She had me on my back in no time and I stayed like
that for three days.
Hurricane Hugo
I felt a little awkward at first about
covering a male hurricane — not that
there's anything wrong with that. I
urged Miles O'Brien to do Hugo instead.
But something about Hugo lured me.
His manly winds. His powerful rains.
In the end, I succumbed and let him
have his way with me.
Hurricane Ivan
Ivan was a monster. I just want to
forget him and get on with my life.
If that's okay.
Hurricane Katrina
Katrina made me a man. I could write a book
about Katrina. Oh wait,
I
am writing a book
about Katrina. She had one fierce appetite.
We stayed together for a month.
Whenever I thought things were over,
she just kept coming back for more.
Hurricane Rita
Rita was my rebound hurricane after Katrina.
I kept wanting to compare her to Katrina. But
there was really no comparison. Things
never really clicked between us.
Hurricane Wilma
Wilma might be my last hurricane for a while.
I'm just dealing with a lot of emotions right now. I'm sure
there will be other hurricanes in the future some day.
I'll be all right.
